Would-be ATM thief makes a big mistake

MOUNT VERNON, Wash. -- Surveillance cameras captured a burglar bashing the front door of Sahara Pizza in Mount Vernon -- and it took a while for the glass to shatter. Once it did, the masked man wearing goggles unlocked the door and went right for the restaurant's ATM.

The restaurant had a dozen security cameras on early Monday morning during the 4 a.m. break-in. They show the thief first attempting to enter a door on the building's delivery side. He busts a light and a camera with a pole.

PSE had to replace a box that that the burglar destroyed trying to cut power to the building. A backup battery kept the alarm and cameras working.

Sahara's manager Anna Chapin watched the surveillance footage and pointed out how the thief's scheme ran into a snag when he tried wrapping a chain around the ATM machine bolted to the floor in the restaurant's entry.

"He has a chain connected to his truck right here and I don't think it's long enough," said Chapin. "It didn't hook to the ATM," she added and watched video showing him dragging the chain back to his light-colored SUV.

There was another flaw in the plot: The ATM was empty.

Jeremiah Buxton of Access Networks set up the restaurant's security system and said the thief apparently didn't know the ATM was bare.

"He wasn't gonna get anything out of it except possibly some jail time," Buxton said.
