Don't know if you need brake pads or brake shoes? Here are the basics: brake pads are used with disc brakes. while brake shoes fit with brake drums. Both styles serve the same function—pressing against a moving surface to slow and stop your car.
Which type you will need depends on your specific car. Some have disc brakes in the front and drum brakes in the rear.
Your disc brake pads handle up to 75% of your vehicle's braking needs. Braking power may be severely reduced if brake pads are worn thin. Worn brake pads are not only dangerous, but will cause expensive rotor damage if neglected. Worn brake shoes can dramatically reduce the stopping power of your vehicle. Ignoring worn shoes can lead to more expensive repairs such as grooved brake drums that will have to be replaced. If your brake shoes are worn out, it will also accelerate front disc pad wear, causing a low brake pedal and delayed braking response.
When your car brake pads or brake shoes are close to wearing out, metallic tabs will create a squealing noise when the brakes are applied, to alert you that the brake linings are due for replacement. Heed the warning. If you ignore the signal long enough, you can do costly damage to the rotors, drums and other components…this will ultimately lead to an unpleasant auto brake repair bill.
