Getting fired up about safety, prevention

Practice makes perfect.

Next week, fourth graders in Beloit will be able to put their knowledge of fire safety and prevention into practice when they visit the Stateline Area Survive Alive House.

Starting Oct. 5 the Beloit Fire Department will be partaking in National Fire Prevention Week, and they will be educating students of all ages on Read more morningstarstorage.com fire safety.

This year’s theme for fire prevention is “Working Smoke Alarms Save Lives. Test Yours Every Month.”

Beloit Acting Fire Lt. Marge Polizzi said Pre-K through third grade students learn the basics of fire safety and prevention, but in fourth grade they get to put those tips to the test.

Close to 800 students from Beloit will visit the Stateline Survive Alive House on Oct. 7 near the Town of Beloit Fire Department next week.

“It gives them a practical chance to try out what they’ve learned,” she said. “They get to crawl out of the house, put into practice a skill they need. It’s a skill that could save their lives one day.”

Polizzi said being in a fire emergency situation, even in practice, can be scary, but the students like the drills because they are usually with their friends.

“It’s eye opening for them,” she said. “It’s almost like their graduation after learning all this since Pre-K.”

This year they are expanding the training up through sixth grade because of the different structure grades at some Beloit schools. When students enter the fifth grade the firefighters talk to students about arson and some of the potential dangers with gas-heated appliances.

Sixth graders will now have the opportunity to learn about Emergency Medical Service (EMS) training, and providing basic first aid until paramedics get to the scene of an emergency. While it isn’t solely focused on fire prevention, Polizzi said it’s an important skill to have during an emergency.

She added students from Janesville will also be attending the Survive Alive House next week.

Beloit Firefighter Bill Bartz said in conjunction with the event at the Survive Alive House, several departments will be hosting the 21st Annual fundraising event for the house.

The fundraiser will be held from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Oct. 9 at the Beloit Pizza Hut, 2787 Prairie Ave. Bartz said several fire departments will be in the parking lot and will show children and their parents around fire engines and other equipment.

“We will have personnel helping the wait staff (at Pizza Hut),” he said. “And the employees will graciously donate their tip money to help benefit the Survive Alive House.”

Bartz said they usually raise about $1,200 each year during the Pizza Hut fundraiser to help with the maintenance and upkeep of the Survive Alive House.
